Welcome to the "von Bennigsen Web Site" (still under construction).

Since 980, the Bennigsen family has been based largely in Germany, in and around the town of Bennigsen (Princedom of Hanover), and the head of the family still inhabits the castle of Bennigsen. In 1773, there was a small emigration, firstly to England, then to Russia, led by Levin (Leonty) von Bennigsen, who became a General of the Imperial Russian Army, and was made a Count for his services against the forces of Napoleon, and his younger brother, Karl, who was a Colonel in the Russian Army. Karl's descendants spread to Latvia, France and England, subsequent to his death. Levin's descendants spread to Poland, France and England, where the line is upon the brink of extinction. However, a fair force remained in Bennigsen, ever dwindling, and has now spread world-wide. In 1980, the thousand-year anniversary of the family was celebrated in Bennigsen, the first gathering of the entire family since 1618. The Harcourts have been in existance since 860, and 1971 saw the marriage of Susan Anne Harcourt to Sergei, Baron von Bennigsen (a descendant of Karl).
